The Good Way

Glorious Monday morning to you all! Well, we made it through the first week of the new year. I wonder how many of you have kept your resolutions. It’s really none of my business what you resolve to do, but I’ll share mine with you. This year I resolve to go even lower. God won’t elevate someone whose haughty spirit is larger than life — not saying that describes me, but I know that in this next phase of my life, I need to lead by example. For me that means being of humble mind and spirit. Where God is taking me requires humility. I want that to be my legacy.

Recently I attended a homegoing celebration of life for a friend’s brother, and I’ve not been the same since then. Every story shared about this man was a testament to his love for God and family. I didn’t know him personally, but I know I would’ve called him friend. The songs the choir sang were all familiar songs I’d either heard in church or on KJCB Radio on Sunday mornings before going to church.

For the next week or so, I slowly and meticulously created a playlist of oldies but goodies from the Gospel genre. As I listened to them, they transported me back to the early 80’s. The place? Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church. The group? Gospel Express. That was a time when denomination didn’t matter. We just all knew we wanted to be there. The group may have drawn us there, but the pastor’s message, supplemented by the choir’s, was the most filling thing most of us had ingested all week. I now know why people would “get the holy spirit” when they heard certain songs in church. We used to call it “getting happy” when we were little. My Aunt Anna got happy on the regular (side eye).

Today I encourage you to count it all joy when you face tough times. I implore you to face your circumstances head on — whatever they may be. If you’re at a crossroads in your life, look around. Ask God for the ancient paths. Ask him, “Where is the Good Way?” Walk in it, and you will find rest for your soul. May blessings abound!

Before you leave, listen to this Music Monday oldie. Trust me; you won’t be able to sit still. ~Michelle
