Today is a Good Day

As I read Psalm 121 after a good night’s sleep, I was comforted by the promise that God does not slumber; he does not sleep. Yesterday, I made a promise to myself that I would not watch any of the political coverage after voting. I spent a few hours fellowshipping with new friends from my church, and I returned home filled with joy, thanksgiving, and hope. Those feelings weren’t products of the circus we’ve been forced to attend for the past few months. I attribute those feelings to my faith and a right relationship with God. Because of that relationship, I have been able to filter out opinions that I never fathomed people held, accept that my opinion isn’t the only opinion, and assure myself that God has a plan. He has the vision that we are unable to see.

Many are talking about what will happen — though no human actually knows what will happen. We can worry about tomorrow while still living on this day, but it won’t benefit us.

Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad. ~Proverbs 12:25

Today is a good day to start anew — building a relationship with God. Some of us are so far from him that we can’t hear his voice, can’t feel his presence, can’t acknowledge that he created us all. Somehow, we (as your village) dropped the ball. In our effort to make disciples, we may have forgotten to circle back to you regularly to insure that you were on the right path. Here are two ways to get yourself on track:

  1. Read the word of God daily. There are so many reading plans and apps today to help you navigate your way through the entire bible. Develop a “Can Do” mindset.
  2. Join a bible-based church, and actively seek a ministry in which to serve. We all have gifts, and we must share them with others.

Today is a good day to be a bridge builder. We can’t build a bridge that only connects believers to believers, Democrats to Democrats, Immigrants to Immigrants, and college-educated to college-educated. We exclude so many by doing that. Aren’t we already divided? What can you do today to be a bridge builder?

Today is a good day to forgive yourself and each other. This isn’t an easy task, but I challenge you to start today. We have spewed hate, or watched it happen without intervening or responding as we should. It’s not ok, but you can forgive yourself for it. What happens next will lead to healing if we make a promise to forgive each other.

Today is a good day to just breathe. For the past few months, we have been stuck between Scylla and Charibdis — a rock and a hard place. We’re all a little worn, wounded, and weary after a mind-blowing, e-mail leaking, hot mic having race to the White House. Some are pleased with America’s choice for President; others are planning to move abroad — for real this time. What many have somehow forgotten is that God is in control of everything. There are no better hands to hold this world.

Today is a good day to draw near to him and watch him move. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. God can use anyone at any given moment. I’m expecting something big to come out of our collective gasps, tears, sighs, and silence. Replace your fears with faith, your bitterness with kindness, your tales of woe with testimonies.
