Throughout the month of May, we have shared so many heartwarming stories about mothers and grandmothers who have left indelible marks on our hearts and in our minds. Today we’ll celebrate Damia’s mom Lorrayne. Damia is a single, spirited blogger who blogs at Single Girls Rock. Please check out her site, but while you’re here, take a little time to read some of her lessons learned from her beautiful mother.
Always Listen to Mama
My mother was Wonder Woman. That’s the image that comes to mind when I think of her. She was hands down the strongest and most courageous woman I knew. One of the biggest lessons (andthere were many!) she taught me was to pay attention to what life is trying to tell you.
When I was in my early 20s my mom would repeatedly say that life provides you with lessons to learn and while I can choose to ignore these lessons, they wouldn’t go away, rather they’d get harder. Let me tell you, I was not trying to receive this at all! My response every time she said this was “well I’m not trying to learn what life wants to teach me, I have other things to do!”
She’d laugh and just shake her head. Imagine my shock and horror when what she said proved to be true (don’t you hate when your mom is right?). My 20s were a roller coaster ride that my mom helped me navigate. What I realized much later was we tend to get so caught up in our goals (finding the right ‘one’ – I still haven’t figured that one out, finding the right job, etc.) that oftentimes we miss some of the lessons.
For example, the man I just knew was my soulmate…wasn’t. Now life tried to send me all kinds of warnings but I was too focused on the image of who he and I were as a couple. I ignored the signs, and my mom. By the time I figured it out, my heart was in the shredder. My mom supported me, reminded me how strong I was, and gave me the safe space to recover. I’ve since learned to pay attention to the signs life is showing me. And I will forever be grateful to my mother for this lesson.

Oh yeah, they always right about almost everything. Freaky.
Great story, Damia!! I think it’s so hard to listen to our moms at times as well, because it’s hard to hear the truth! 🙂
Moms tell it like it is. We need that sometimes.
What a blessing to have the dynamics of a mom-daughter relationship as an adult
